Is Toyosu Market Open on Wednesday? The 2026 Closure Calendar, Explained

Usually not: Toyosu Market is closed on 45 of the 52 Wednesdays in 2026 and open on seven. Every 2026 closed day, the early-2027 calendar, and what stays open next door when the market shuts.

Updated October 2026

Usually not. Toyosu Market is closed on 45 of the 52 Wednesdays in 2026 and open on seven: May 6, August 12, September 23, October 14, November 4, November 25 and December 30. There is no fixed “second and fourth Wednesday” rule. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government sets every closed day individually in an annual calendar, and for 2026 the seafood side of the market has 251 open days and 114 closed days. On a closed day the whole visitor area shuts, restaurants included, while the Toyosu Senkyaku Banrai food hall next door stays open.

The short answer:

  • Wednesdays: 45 closed and 7 open in 2026. The market also closes every Sunday (except December 27, 2026), most national holidays, January 1 to 4, August 14 to 16 and December 31.
  • On a closed day you cannot get in at all. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government says that on Sundays, holidays and other closed days you cannot enter the market, “飲食店舗・物販店舗を含め” (restaurants and shops included). Only the rooftop garden (5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.) and Senkyaku Banrai, which officially has no closing days, stay open.
  • What to do: check your exact date against the official calendar at shijou.metro.tokyo.lg.jp/calendar/2026, and plan Toyosu for a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday. If your only free morning is a closed day, switch to Senkyaku Banrai, teamLab Planets or Tsukiji, where many shops close too, but not all.

Guided auction mornings run on trading days only, so a tour is one way to make sure you are not standing at a locked door at 5 a.m. The Tokyo: Toyosu Tuna Auction & Tsukiji Market Gourmet Adventure (4.9/5 from more than 460 reviews, from $114) pairs the auction with a tasting walk through Tsukiji, and its calendar below shows only the dates it runs.

The seven open Wednesdays, and why they open

The Wednesday rule is “most, not all”. The 2026 seafood calendar from the Tokyo Metropolitan Central Wholesale Market (page updated September 5, 2025) opens seven Wednesdays:

  • Two are public holidays when the market trades: May 6, a substitute holiday at the end of Golden Week, and September 23, Autumnal Equinox Day.
  • Four are “seafood only” days: October 14, November 4, November 25 and December 30. The fruit and vegetable side closes, but the fish side and the tuna auction run normally.
  • August 12 falls between Mountain Day (August 11) and the Obon closure (August 14 to 16), both closed.

The 2027 calendar is out. It was published September 11, 2026, with 250 open days and 115 closed days. Six Wednesdays are open in 2027: January 6, March 31, May 5, September 22, November 24 and December 29.

Toyosu sits beside Senkyaku Banrai, teamLab Planets and the Toyosu waterfront, a short ride from Odaiba, Tsukiji Outer Market and Ginza. Guided Tokyo food tours, tickets and other experiences are below:

Fruit-and-vegetable-only closures: on October 14, November 4, November 25 and December 30, 2026, the official calendar marks only produce (青果物) as closed. The seafood side, the tuna auction and the fish-side restaurants run normally, but the produce auction viewing in Block 5 does not. Daiwa Sushi sits in the Block 5 produce building, so check whether it opens on those days before you plan breakfast around it.

Restaurants have two layers of closures. First, they follow the market calendar: if the market is shut, they are shut. Second, each shop has its own days off and closes early when it sells out, and the official visitor page warns that some shops “見学時間内に営業を終了する” (close during visiting hours). Sushi Dai’s listings say “closed Wednesdays and Sundays”, which is shorthand for the market calendar. An open Wednesday does not mean every shop is open.

Senkyaku Banrai runs on its own clock. Its official FAQ says “休業日はありません。豊洲市場の休市日にも営業しております”: there are no closing days, and it is open even on Toyosu Market closed days. The catch is that most of it does not open until 10:00 a.m. Our Senkyaku Banrai guide covers the food street, the onsen and the foot bath.

Planning a morning on an open day

Hours and entry

  • Visitor areas are open 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on trading days, and entry is free. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s English page says each market-related shop and restaurant keeps its own hours. Older guides that give 5:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. are repeating a schedule from the COVID years.
  • Enter only at the three pedestrian-deck entrances, one per block. No eating or drinking in the walkways or on the benches, and there is no visitor parking or bicycle parking.
  • You cannot go onto the trading floors, and the intermediate wholesale floor serves trade buyers, not the public.
  • Watch for one-off restrictions. On September 25, 2026 the Tokyo Metropolitan Government posted “豊洲市場の見学者コースの入場規制について” (restrictions on entry to the visitor course at Toyosu Market). It covered the October 24 Tokyo Bay fireworks only, closing the visitor course from 2:00 p.m. that day, but it shows the walkway can be restricted at short notice, so check the official notices page before you go.

Tuna auction: two ways to watch, both free

  • The 2nd-floor visitor walkway (Block 7) opens at 5:00 a.m. and needs no application. The official FAQ says there is no limit on visitor numbers there, although the September 2026 notice may change that. You watch through glass from above, with live audio from the floor.
  • The observation deck (lottery) has 100 places a day, up to five per group. Infants count toward the total, and the lead applicant must be junior-high age or older. Apply at toyosu.jcdlotterysite.jp in the application window, usually about a week early in the month before your visit. Winners gather at 5:30 a.m. at the PR Corner (Block 7, 3rd floor) and view from 5:45 to 6:25 a.m. Everyone in the group needs photo ID (children without one can show a health insurance card), late arrivals are sent to the 2nd-floor walkway, flash is banned, and visibly drunk visitors are turned away.
  • Recent windows: the January 2026 round took applications from December 3 (3:00 p.m.) to December 9, 2025 (11:59 p.m.), with results on December 18. The November 2026 round closed October 14, 2026. One guide gives the December 2026 round as November 4 to 10, but that is not officially confirmed, and one tour operator says there is no December lottery. The official FAQ (updated June 2025) confirms that no applications are taken for December 25 to January 5, so check the lottery site for the rest. Our tuna auction and lottery guide walks through the application.

Getting there

  • Yurikamome to Shijo-mae (U-14). The station connects to the market by an elevated walkway, and the ride from Shimbashi takes about 30 minutes.
  • First trains: the first Yurikamome from Shimbashi leaves at 5:45 a.m. on weekdays and weekends, too late for a 5:30 lottery gathering. The early route is the Tokyo Metro Yurakucho Line to Toyosu, then the first Yurikamome from Toyosu, which reaches Shijo-mae a few minutes later. Check the current timetable before your visit.
  • Buses: Toei bus 市01 runs from Shimbashi every 10 to 15 minutes between about 5:00 and 9:00 a.m., takes about 25 minutes and does not run on Sundays or holidays. The Tokyo BRT is faster, but its first bus is after 6:00 a.m.
  • Taxi: the realistic choice for a 5:00 a.m. arrival from Shinjuku, Shibuya or Asakusa. Our guide to getting to Toyosu before dawn compares the options.

Eating

  • There are 39 restaurants inside the market: 22 in Block 6 (3rd floor), 13 in Block 7 (3rd floor) and the rest in Block 5 (1st floor). Sources give three or four for Block 5.
  • Sushi Dai (Block 6, 3rd floor) is cash only, with peak waits of two to four hours or more, and it now uses a check-in and return-time system. Several 2026 listings price its omakase nigiri set at ¥5,500; confirm on the day.
  • Daiwa Sushi (Block 5, 1st floor) has about 22 seats. Its official listing gives Monday to Saturday, 5:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., closed on Sundays, holidays and market closed days. It turns tables faster, with waits often 30 to 90 minutes, and a local guide reports that it takes cards and PayPay.
  • Carry yen anyway, because card acceptance varies from stall to stall. Our guide to the best sushi at Toyosu covers the other counters.

When to go: 5:00 to 6:30 a.m. for the auction, breakfast before 8:00 a.m., then Uogashi Yokocho before it winds down around midday. Afternoons are quiet and most shops are closed. The building is enclosed and climate-controlled, but the auction area is chilly, so bring a layer. The building also keeps you dry, which our guide to Toyosu on a rainy day covers in detail.

Accessibility: the visitor walkways connect to the station by lifts and decks. The official rules for school groups require wheelchair users to be accompanied, and Senkyaku Banrai lends wheelchairs if you ask in advance.

Toyosu and Tsukiji Outer Market on a closed day

Tsukiji Outer Market follows the same wholesale calendar, and its own 2026 map says “Many shops are closed on Sundays, Wednesdays and National Holidays.” Some shops still open, and the Plat Tsukiji information center keeps reduced hours (10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.) on market closure days.

On an open day, do both: Toyosu at dawn, then about 10 minutes by taxi to Tsukiji for its 9:00 a.m. public hours. On a closed Wednesday, Tsukiji is only a partial fallback, and Senkyaku Banrai plus teamLab Planets is the more dependable plan. Our Tsukiji Outer Market guide covers what to eat there.

Common mistakes

  1. Trusting a weekday rule. “Closed Wednesdays” is wrong seven times in 2026, and “open Wednesdays” is wrong 45 times. GO TOKYO’s listing (“Closing days: Wednesdays Sundays Holidays Irregular”) is a simplification.
  2. Assuming the restaurants open when the market is closed. They do not, and you cannot enter the building.
  3. Confusing “Toyosu Jogai Shijo” with Tsukiji. Since September 1, 2025, Senkyaku Banrai has called its food zone “Toyosu Jogai Shijo” (Toyosu Outer Market). It has nothing to do with Tsukiji Outer Market.
  4. Thinking Tsukiji closed. Only the inner wholesale market moved.
  5. Thinking you need the lottery to see the auction. The 2nd-floor walkway is free and needs no booking.
  6. Taking the first train from Shimbashi for a 5:30 a.m. gathering. It arrives too late.
  7. Showing up for sushi at noon. Popular counters may have stopped taking names hours earlier.
  8. Booking a tour that promises deck access. The official FAQ says travel agencies cannot apply for you, and reselling places is banned.

What changed in 2025 and 2026

  • September 1, 2025: Senkyaku Banrai renamed its retail and dining zone “Toyosu Jogai Shijo”.
  • September 5, 2025: the 2026 calendar was published, with 251 open and 114 closed days, down from 253 open days in 2025.
  • January 5, 2026: at the first auction of the year, a 243 kg Oma bluefin sold for ¥510.3 million (about ¥2.1 million per kg), an all-time record. The buyer was Kiyomura Corp., which runs Sushi Zanmai, and its president Kiyoshi Kimura beat his own 2019 record of ¥333.6 million. Our guide to bluefin tuna record prices explains why the first sale goes so high.
  • September 11, 2026: the 2027 calendar was published, with 250 open and 115 closed days.
  • September 25, 2026: the Tokyo Metropolitan Government posted the visitor-course entry restriction notice.
  • October 7, 2026: the government’s English Toyosu page was updated, with a lottery schedule for May 2026 to April 2027.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Toyosu Market open on Wednesday?

Usually not. In 2026 it is closed on 45 Wednesdays and open on seven: May 6, August 12, September 23, October 14, November 4, November 25 and December 30.

Is Toyosu Market closed on the second and fourth Wednesdays?

No. There is no fixed pattern; closed days are set date by date in the annual official calendar.

Is Toyosu Market open on Sunday?

No, except Sunday, December 27, 2026, a special trading day before New Year, when the visitor walkway is expected to open (confirm in late December). Our Sunday guide covers what is open next door.

Can I eat at Toyosu restaurants when the market is closed?

No. On closed days you cannot enter the market, restaurants and shops included.

What is open at Toyosu on a closed day?

The rooftop garden (5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.) and Toyosu Senkyaku Banrai. Senkyaku Banrai has no closing days, but most of it opens at 10:00 a.m.

When is Toyosu closed for New Year 2026 to 2027?

From December 31, 2026 to January 4, 2027. It reopens on Tuesday, January 5, 2027 with the first auction; our New Year guide has the details.

Do I need a ticket to see the tuna auction?

Not for the 2nd-floor walkway, which is free and opens at 5:00 a.m. The close-up deck is allocated by a free monthly lottery with 100 places a day.

How many days is Toyosu closed in 2026?

114 days on the seafood side, which leaves 251 open days.

Is Tsukiji open when Toyosu is closed?

Partly. It follows the same calendar and many shops close, but some stay open, and Plat Tsukiji runs from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Bottom line

Assume a Wednesday is closed until the calendar says otherwise: in 2026 only seven of them trade, and on a closed day the restaurants shut along with the walkways. Pick a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday for the auction and breakfast, and keep Senkyaku Banrai, teamLab Planets and Tsukiji for a closed morning. Check your exact date against the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s calendar once your trip is fixed, because the authority can add or move a closed day at short notice.
