Toyosu Market Christmas & New Year 2026–2027: Closing Dates, First Tuna Auction & What's Open
Toyosu Market trades on Christmas Day, closes from 31 December 2026 to 4 January 2027 and reopens with the first tuna auction on 5 January. A day-by-day grid, how to watch, and what stays open.

Toyosu Market’s last trading day of 2026 is Wednesday 30 December, and only the seafood side trades that day. The market is closed from Thursday 31 December 2026 to Monday 4 January 2027, and it reopens on Tuesday 5 January 2027 with the first tuna auction (hatsuseri) of the year. Christmas is not a holiday in Japan, so Friday 25 December is an ordinary trading day, auction and sushi counters included. The 2026 first auction set an all-time record: a 243 kg Oma bluefin sold for ¥510.3 million, about $3.2 million.
The short answer:
- Dates: Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are normal trading days. Sunday 27 December 2026 is a special trading day: the market trades, and the visitor walkway is expected to open, but confirm in late December. Wednesday 30 December is the last day of trading (seafood only) and 31 December is closed. On the 2027 calendar, 5 January is the first trading day, and 6 January is open for seafood too.
- The auction: the walk-up upper visitor walkway is free and opens at 5:00 a.m., but the first-auction bell has rung at about 5:10 a.m. in recent years, before most trains arrive. The close-up lottery deck takes no applications for 25 December to 5 January, on the official FAQ.
- What is open: everything inside the market, restaurants like Sushi Dai included, is shut on closed days. Toyosu Senkyaku Banrai next door and its 24-hour Manyo Club onsen stayed open through the 2025 to 2026 New Year, and the rooftop garden is open every day.
- Our pick: go on 28 or 29 December, when the market is at its year-end peak and tours run, or on 6 to 9 January for fresh post-holiday stock and far fewer television crews. Treat 5 January as a bucket-list gamble.
If your trip spans the break, plan the market around it. A small-group tour that covers the tuna auction and a Tsukiji tasting walk is the easiest way to see the market on a trading day; check availability for the dates on either side of the closure.

The rooftop garden is open from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. on every day in the grid, closed days included, and Senkyaku Banrai next door has no closing days.
The full December 2026 closed-day list is 2, 6, 9, 13, 16, 20, 23 and 31 December, which leaves 23 trading days. The Tokyo Metropolitan Central Wholesale Market sets closed days through its trading operations council. The 2026 rules close the market on Sundays and Wednesdays in weeks without a national holiday, close it from 1 to 4 January and on 31 December, and make 27 December an exceptional Sunday opening.
The 2027 calendar was posted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government on 11 September 2026, with 250 seafood trading days and 115 closed days. It lists 6 January, 31 March, 24 November, 26 December and 30 December 2027 as closed days for the fruit and vegetable side only, which makes Wednesday 6 January 2027 a seafood trading day. The day-by-day January grid is in the official PDF, so confirm the 5 January opening there once your trip is fixed. Our guide to when to visit Toyosu Fish Market has the full 2026 and 2027 closed-day calendar and a date checker.
The past pattern is why 5 January is the safe expectation:
- 2024 to 2025: closed 31 December to 4 January, and the first market day was Sunday 5 January 2025, with the fresh-tuna first auction from just after 5:00 a.m.
- 2025 to 2026: a special Sunday opening on 28 December 2025, seafood only on 30 December, closed 31 December to 4 January, and the first market day on Monday 5 January 2026, when 801.7 tonnes of seafood arrived, 111.8 per cent of the year before.
If you read the Toyosu Market Association’s year-end notice from last season, check the weekdays before you copy anything. Its December 2025 post gives “12月30日(火)”, which was right for 2025, but 30 December 2026 is a Wednesday.
The year-end rush. From 27 to 30 December, Tokyo’s restaurant trade and home cooks stock up for the New Year feast, so expect the most crowded market days of the year, and faster trading, with less patience for tourists. For visitors, 28 and 29 December have the best energy, and 30 December is seafood only and frantic. Senkyaku Banrai ran a year-end sale from 27 to 31 December in 2025.
Tokyo does not stop for New Year, and the bay area has plenty to fill the closed days. Nearby you have the Senkyaku Banrai food street and Manyo Club onsen, teamLab Planets, the Tsukiji Outer Market, LaLaport Toyosu, Odaiba and the Rainbow Bridge. Guided Tokyo food tours and other experiences are below:
Christmas Day and the last week of December
Christmas is a working day in Japan, so Toyosu treats it like any other Friday. On 25 December 2026 the tuna auction runs, the visitor walkway opens at 5:00 a.m., and the restaurants and Uogashi Yokocho shops keep their usual market-day hours. We found nothing Christmas-themed inside the market itself. It is a good day to go, because it falls just before the 27 to 30 December rush and the lottery deck is the one thing you will miss.
Christmas Eve (Thursday 24 December) is also a normal market day. Saturday 26 December is open and busier, as Saturdays always are. Sunday 27 December is the market’s one Sunday trading day of the year. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government bars visitors on “Sundays, holidays and other closed days”, and 27 December is a trading day, not a closed day, so the visitor walkway is expected to open. No official page says so in writing, so confirm in late December. Our guide to Toyosu on a Sunday covers what is open on the other Sundays.
Sushi counters in the last week. Sushi Dai opens at about 6:00 a.m. on market days, and the queue on 28 to 30 December can be the longest of the year outside 5 January. Daiwa Sushi is in the fruit and vegetable building (Block 5), and that side of the market is closed on Wednesday 30 December 2026 and Wednesday 6 January 2027. We could not confirm whether Daiwa opens on those two seafood-only Wednesdays, so ask at the shop or pick Sushi Dai or Bentomi in the seafood building on those dates.
Guided walks stop for the holidays. The Koto Tourism Association suspends its volunteer-guided Toyosu Market tours from mid-December to early January because of the crowds; last season’s break ran from 14 December 2025 to 5 January 2026. Commercial tours keep running on trading days, and the bookable windows are listed under guided tours below.
The first tuna auction of the year
Our dedicated guide to the first tuna auction has the full price history and viewing options; the short version follows.
When. The first auction falls on Tuesday 5 January 2027, the first seafood trading day on the official 2027 calendar. In 2025 the tuna auction began at 5:10 a.m. (The Japan Times), in 2024 it began at around 5:10 a.m. (the Mainichi), and the market association described the fresh-tuna first auction as starting from just after 5:00 a.m. A bell signals the start, and the top fish is sold within moments.
How it works. Hundreds of tuna are laid out on the low-temperature auction floor. Buyers inspect tail cuts with flashlights and hooks before the bell, and then auctioneers take bids with rapid calls and hand signals. On an ordinary day about 200 fresh and 1,000 frozen tuna can be on the floor, according to the Toyosu Market Association. The New Year price is a ceremonial, good-luck and publicity bid, and buyers routinely pay far above market value for the media coverage.
The record prices, for the top fish at each first auction:
| Year | Price | Weight and origin | Winning buyer |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2019 | ¥333.6 million | 278 kg, Oma | Kiyomura (Sushi Zanmai), Kiyoshi Kimura |
| 2020 | ¥193.2 million | 276 kg, Oma | Kiyomura (Sushi Zanmai) |
| 2021 | ¥20.84 million | 208 kg, Oma | Onodera Group and Yamayuki |
| 2022 | ¥16.88 million | 211 kg, Oma | Onodera Group and Yamayuki |
| 2023 | ¥36.04 million | 212 kg, Oma | Onodera Group and Yamayuki |
| 2024 | ¥114.24 million | 238 kg, Oma | Onodera Group and Yamayuki |
| 2025 | ¥207 million | 276 kg, Oma | Onodera Group, bid by Yamayuki |
| 2026 | ¥510.3 million | 243 kg, Oma | Kiyomura (Sushi Zanmai), Kiyoshi Kimura |
The 2025 win was the fifth in a row for the wholesaler Yamayuki, which bids on behalf of the Onodera Group’s Sushi Ginza Onodera and Nadaman. Its president, Yukitaka Yamaguchi, is often called the “God of Tuna”. At ¥750,000 a kilogram, that fish was then the second-highest price ever.
In 2026 the fish cost ¥2.1 million a kilogram, according to AP. Yamayuki pushed the bidding to ¥2 million a kilogram, which would have made ¥486 million for this fish, and moments later Kiyomura raised the bid to ¥2.1 million. Kimura told reporters he had hoped to pay less, but the price shot up before he knew it. The runner-up that morning sold for just ¥7.83 million (174 kg, ¥45,000 a kilogram), about one sixty-fifth of the winner. The 2026 fish smashed Kimura’s own 2019 record. Our guide to bluefin tuna auction record prices covers every year, the exchange-rate caveats and the bluefin stock recovery: Pacific bluefin stood at about 2 per cent of its historical size a decade or so ago, and the rebuilding plan has worked well.
Can tourists watch it?
- The close-up lottery deck. On normal days the deck holds up to 100 people, viewing runs from 5:45 to 6:25 a.m., entry is free, and applications open in the first part of the month before through the official lottery site. Groups can be up to 5 (babies count), you can pick up to 3 dates, there is no second round, and photo ID is checked on arrival. Our guide to the tuna auction lottery and viewing times sets out the windows.
- The New Year gap. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s lottery FAQ says applications for early-morning tuna auction viewing are not accepted for 25 December to 5 January, so there is no deck on Christmas Day, in the year-end rush or at the first auction. The January 2026 round also listed its first deck date as 6 January. No operator can promise deck access on these dates.
- The upper visitor walkway. Free, with no booking and no cap on numbers, open from 5:00 a.m. on market days, with live audio from the auction floor. It is double-glazed and looks down mostly on the frozen tuna section, and the fresh-tuna floor is harder to see. On first-auction day expect heavy media and crowds and possibly changed arrangements. This is not officially documented, so check the Toyosu Market Association’s news page in late December.
- The timing problem. The earliest Yurikamome train from Toyosu reaches Shijo-mae at about 5:17 a.m., after the 5:10 a.m. bell in recent years. If you come by train you will probably miss the sale of the top fish itself. Take a taxi, or stay nearby.
Watching remotely. Japanese broadcasters and wire services cover the first auction live or within the hour, and the major papers post video. We will not be able to update this page live, so look for the result on the morning of 5 January.
Should you go on 5 January?
It is worth it if you are staying in Toyosu or taking a taxi, are happy to arrive at 5:00 a.m., are fine with watching through glass among news crews, and are not counting on a sushi counter, because the queues will be long. Skip it if you want the lower deck or a relaxed experience. A realistic dawn timeline looks like this:
- 4:30 a.m.: taxi to the market
- 5:00 a.m.: the visitor walkway opens
- About 5:10 a.m.: the bell
- 6:30 a.m.: join the sushi queue
- 10:00 a.m.: Senkyaku Banrai opens for a soak in the onsen
What is open while the market is closed
| Closed 31 December to 4 January? | Notes | |
|---|---|---|
| Toyosu Market (auction, walkways, restaurants, Uogashi Yokocho shops) | Yes | The Tokyo Metropolitan Government says that on closed days “you cannot enter Toyosu Market”, restaurants and shops included |
| Rooftop garden | No | Open 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. even on closed days, with a free Tokyo Bay view; no drinking or smoking |
| Toyosu Senkyaku Banrai | No | Stayed open through the 2025 to 2026 New Year; 2026 to 2027 hours not yet announced |
| Manyo Club onsen | No | Open 24 hours over the 2025 to 2026 New Year |
| Tsukiji Outer Market | Mostly | Most shops close from 1 January for several days, but each shop sets its own days |
Inside Toyosu Market. The visitor walkways are open from 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on market days, and the PR Corner from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (to 11:30 a.m. on Saturdays). The famous sushi counters, Sushi Dai, Daiwa Sushi and Bentomi, are market tenants, so assume they are closed from 31 December to 4 January, with the busiest queues of the season on 5 and 6 January 2027. Restaurant hours vary by shop and differ from visitor hours.
Toyosu Senkyaku Banrai, the Edo-style food hall and onsen that opened in February 2024, is the best place to go when the market is closed. For 2025 to 2026 the official site said it would open without a break over the New Year, and a New Year festival ran from 1 to 12 January 2026, with mochi-throwing on 1 January, mochi-pounding on 2 and 3 January, Daikoku and Ebisu dances on 2 to 4 January and rickshaw rides on 10 to 12 January. In 2024 to 2025 the food hall ran normal hours except 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on 1 January. The Tokyo Toyosu Manyo Club onsen stays open 24 hours over the New Year, with limited 70-minute buffet slots from 29 December to 3 January in 2025 to 2026. The 2026 to 2027 hours had not been announced at the time of writing, so treat them as expected and check before you go. Our guide to Toyosu Senkyaku Banrai has the details.
Tsukiji Outer Market. The market’s official notice for the 2023 year end announced 25 to 30 December as the peak shopping period, with all stores open from around 6:00 a.m., and 31 December as a day when some stores close or have reduced hours. Most stores then close from 1 January for several days. The peak crush is on 29 and 30 December, from about 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The outer market’s own calendar mirrors the central wholesale market, so expect most shops to reopen on 5 January 2027, and Tsukiji Uogashi follows the Toyosu calendar. In December 2025 the market also asked tourism operators to refrain from food-walking and guided tours during the December rush, so check that a tour still includes its Tsukiji walk. Our Tsukiji Outer Market guide covers what to eat and buy.
The first sunrise from the rooftop. Sunrise in central Tokyo on 1 January is at about 6:51 a.m., based on the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan’s figures, and the rooftop garden opens at 5:00 a.m. even though the market is closed. It is not promoted as a hatsuhinode (first sunrise) spot, and we cannot promise a clear eastern horizon, so treat it as a free, quiet option and check for New Year restrictions on the day. You reach it from the Block 6 pedestrian deck by lift or stairs.
Wider Tokyo over New Year. From 1 to 3 January the city is at its quietest commercially. Many independent restaurants and department stores close, while convenience stores, big chains, outlets, shrines and many attractions stay open. Meiji Jingu, Senso-ji and other shrines draw huge crowds from midnight on 31 December. teamLab Planets, one stop away in Toyosu, stays open over the New Year with shorter evenings: its schedule lists 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. from Thursday 31 December to Saturday 2 January, against the usual 10:00 p.m. close, with last entry an hour before closing. We could not load the official page to recheck it, so confirm on teamlab.art when you book your timed ticket. The Odaiba malls usually operate over the New Year too, but their 2026 to 2027 hours had not been published at the time of writing. Our teamLab Planets and Toyosu itinerary sets out four timed plans.
For 31 December to 4 January, head to Senkyaku Banrai for food, the footbath and the onsen, the rooftop garden, teamLab Planets and a shrine visit, and do not go to Toyosu expecting to eat.
New Year seafood
New Year is a major seafood period in Japan, and the fish in strong demand include tuna, crab, sea bream, roe and shrimp. The demand peaks before the market closes, which is why 28 to 30 December is the busiest stretch of the year. Our field guide to Japanese fish and seafood at Toyosu names what you are looking at.
Practical information
- Getting there: take the Yurikamome line to Shijo-mae Station, then a pedestrian deck straight into the Administration Building (Block 7), about a 5-minute walk. The earliest train from Toyosu arrives at about 5:17 a.m., and trains from Shimbashi arrive later, so check the official Yurikamome timetable. For a pre-dawn arrival take a taxi (about 10 to 15 minutes from Ginza when the roads are empty) or stay in Toyosu or Ariake. There is no visitor parking. On New Year’s Eve, JR East runs late-night trains on six lines from 31 December 2026 into 1 January 2027, according to its 22 October release as reported by My Navi News: the Yamanote Line runs from about 1:00 to 4:50 a.m., roughly every 10 to 30 minutes. Tokyo Metro and the Yurikamome had not announced their 2026 to 2027 holiday timetables at the time of writing; last season neither ran all night. Our guides to getting to Toyosu Market before sunrise and where to stay for the tuna auction cover the options.
- Cost: market entry, the visitor walkways and the lottery are all free.
- Rules: stay in the visitor areas, do not enter the trading floors, do not touch fish, use no flash, give way to turret trucks and do not arrive intoxicated, because reception can refuse entry. Photo ID is required for the lottery deck.
- Weather: early January in Tokyo is dry and clear, but pre-dawn temperatures are near freezing. The lower deck is exposed to the chilled auction hall, while the walkway is temperate. Wear layers, a hat and gloves.
- Children and access: the walkways are accessible by lift and suit strollers, and children see the floor well from above. Children and babies count in a lottery application.
- Check before you go: individual restaurants and shops can close even on trading days, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government has posted a notice titled “Restrictions on Entry to the Visitor’s Course at Toyosu Market” (25 September 2026). It turned out to be a one-off for the Tokyo Bay Grand Fireworks on 24 October 2026: no entry to the visitor course after 2:00 p.m. that day, and the rooftop garden closed from 11:00 p.m. on 23 October through 24 October. We read the details in the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s post on X and fireworks guides, as the notice page itself would not load for us, but nothing in it touches the year-end period. It does show that the walkway can be restricted at short notice for a big event, so check the official notices page again before first-auction morning.
Guided tours over the New Year
No market tour can run from 31 December 2026 to 4 January 2027. On 5 January 2027 expect tours either to run from the upper walkway with big crowds or to be blocked out by operators, so confirm with the operator. The bookable windows are 21 and 22 December, 24 to 30 December (Christmas Day included), 5 January and 7 to 9 January 2027. For the seafood-only Wednesdays, 30 December and 6 January, check that your operator runs that day, and recheck each listing’s calendar in early December.
- The Toyosu Tuna Auction & Tsukiji Market Gourmet Adventure is a 3.5-hour small-group tour, from $114, with breakfast extra. It is rated 4.9/5 from 486 reviews.
- The Toyosu Tuna Auction + Breakfast at Sushi Dai or Bentomi is a 3-hour tour, from $113, and the meal is not included. It is rated 4.6/5 from 164 reviews, and its operator states that it does not run on Wednesdays, Sundays and holidays that are market closed days.
- The Private Toyosu & Tsukiji Market Adventure with Tuna Auction is a 3-hour private tour for up to 10 people, from $165, rated 4.8/5 from 292 reviews. Its listing says the lottery is unavailable from 25 December to 5 January.
- The Toyosu & Tsukiji Market Food Tour with Tuna Auction is a 3.5-hour food tour, from $120, rated 4.96/5 but on only 30 reviews so far, so read them before you book.
Our comparison of Tokyo fish market tours covers every format, and our guide to how much a tuna auction tour costs compares the prices.
Three New Year myths
- “The lottery is first come, first served.” It is not: the lottery is a random draw.
- “Toyosu closes on 30 December.” Not for seafood in 2026. The fish side trades on 30 December, and only the fruit and vegetable side closes.
- “Senkyaku Banrai follows the market calendar.” It does not over the New Year. It stayed open through the 2025 to 2026 break.
For December dates before the break, see our December 2026 guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Toyosu Market open on New Year’s Day 2027?
No. Toyosu is closed from Thursday 31 December 2026 to Monday 4 January 2027, and the restaurants and shops inside are closed too.
When is the first tuna auction of 2027?
Tuesday 5 January 2027 on the official 2027 calendar, starting around 5:10 a.m. in recent years.
Can I enter the tuna auction lottery for 5 January?
No. The official lottery FAQ says applications are not accepted for 25 December to 5 January, so plan on the free upper walkway.
Can I watch the first auction for free?
Yes, from the walk-in upper visitor walkway, which opens at 5:00 a.m. Expect crowds and media, and plan to arrive by taxi.
What was the record tuna price?
¥510.3 million for a 243 kg Oma bluefin on 5 January 2026, bought by Kiyomura Corp. (Sushi Zanmai).
Is Senkyaku Banrai open when Toyosu Market is closed?
It stayed open through the 2025 to 2026 New Year, and its Manyo Club onsen runs 24 hours. The 2026 to 2027 hours are expected to be similar but have not been announced.
When is the Tsukiji Outer Market busiest?
From 28 to 30 December, with the peak crush on 29 and 30 December from about 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Is Toyosu open on Sunday 27 December 2026?
The market trades that day as a special year-end opening, and the visitor walkway is expected to open, but no official page confirms visitor access in writing, so confirm in late December.
Is Toyosu Market open on Christmas Day?
Yes. Friday 25 December 2026 is a normal trading day, with the tuna auction, the visitor walkway and the restaurants all on their usual market-day hours.
Is Daiwa Sushi open on 30 December and 6 January?
We could not confirm it. Daiwa Sushi is in the fruit and vegetable building, and that side of the market is closed on both Wednesdays, so ask at the shop or plan on Sushi Dai.
Is this worth planning around?
Yes if it matches your priorities, but always check the official Toyosu calendar and current visitor arrangements for your exact date.
What is the best time to arrive?
For most visitors, around 7:00 to 8:00 a.m. is a good balance on an ordinary trading day. On 5 January, arrive by 5:00 a.m. by taxi if you want a place on the walkway.
What should I combine with Toyosu?
Senkyaku Banrai and teamLab Planets are the easiest nearby additions, while Tsukiji works well for a food-focused second stop.
Bottom line
Toyosu Market closes from 31 December to 4 January, and Senkyaku Banrai follows a separate schedule and may be open when the wholesale market is closed. Plan your market morning for Christmas Day, 28 to 30 December or 6 to 9 January, treat 5 January as a gamble that only makes sense if you are staying nearby, and use the closed days for Senkyaku Banrai, teamLab Planets or a shrine visit. Dates on this page were last checked on 31 October 2026, and Senkyaku Banrai, teamLab and Tsukiji New Year hours are usually published in November and December.
