Toyosu Market & Tsukiji: Opening Hours, Closed Days & Best Time to Visit

If the market is one stop in a longer Tokyo day, the list below shows other tours and tickets around Toyosu, Tsukiji and the rest of the city, and it updates on its own.

Toyosu Market opening hours

The visitor areas are open from 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on every trading day, and entry is free. Each restaurant and shop keeps its own hours inside that window, so the real answer depends on what you have come to see.

The buildings are enclosed and temperature-controlled, so the visit is much the same in winter and summer. Time Out Tokyo notes that the auction viewing area is chilly, so bring a layer even in August.

Which time of day to go

For the tuna auction, go early. The auction usually runs from about 5:30 to 6:30 a.m. on trading days; the market says the finishing time depends on how much fish comes in that day. You can watch it free from the upper visitor walkway on the 2nd floor, which opens at 5:00 a.m. and needs no booking, and the sound from the auction floor is played live into the walkway.

The close-up observation deck is a separate option: a lottery run by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, with 100 places a day. Winners meet at 5:30 a.m. and view the auction from 5:45 to 6:25 a.m. Entries open online for about a week early in the month before your visit, and the lottery takes no applications from December 25 to January 5. For breakfast and the shops, go in the morning, after the auction. Each restaurant sets its own hours, and some close as early as 1:00 p.m. The Uogashi Yokocho shops sell mainly to the trade and wind down around midday. Our guide to the best sushi at Toyosu covers which counters to try.

In the afternoon, the building is still open until 5:00 p.m., but the trading is over and the restaurants are closing or closed. It is a good time for the rooftop garden and Toyosu Senkyaku Banrai next door.

Getting there before the first train

The normal first Yurikamome trains from central Tokyo reach Shijō-mae, the market’s own station, too late for the start of the auction. If you want to be there around 5:00 to 5:30 a.m., you will usually need a taxi or a hotel nearby. Check the current timetable before your visit. Closed days in 2026 and 2027

Toyosu Market follows the business-day calendar of the Tokyo Metropolitan Central Wholesale Market, which the Tokyo Metropolitan Government publishes a year at a time. The pattern is the same in every season:

• Sundays are closed, apart from one special opening before New Year: December 27, 2026 and December 26, 2027.
• National holidays are closed, with a few exceptions: May 6 and September 23 in 2026, and May 5 in 2027, are holidays when the market trades.
• Most Wednesdays are closed. There is no fixed “second and fourth Wednesday” rule; the calendar opens a handful of Wednesdays each year, mostly in holiday weeks.
• New Year: closed from December 31 to January 4.
• Mid-August: a few extra closed days, August 14 to 16 in 2026 and 2027.

In 2026 the fish side of the market is open on 251 days and closed on 114; in 2027 it is open on 250 and closed on 115.

Open Wednesdays in 2026: May 6, August 12, September 23, October 14, November 4, November 25 and December 30.

Open Wednesdays in 2027: January 6, March 31, May 5, September 22, November 24 and December 29.

Every closed day, month by month

These are the closed days on the fish side, which is the side with the tuna auction and most of the restaurants.

The fruit and vegetable side closes on a few extra days when the fish side trades: October 14, November 4, November 25 and December 30 in 2026, and January 6, March 31, November 24, December 26 and December 30 in 2027. On those days the tuna auction and the fish-side restaurants run as normal.

The official calendar is on the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s website, and the authority can add or move a closed day, so check your date against it once your trip is fixed.

New Year and the first auction

The market closes from December 31 to January 4 and reopens with the first auction of the year, a ceremonial sale that draws television crews. At the first auction of 2026, on January 5, a 243 kg Ōma bluefin sold for ¥510.3 million, a record. Tsukiji Outer Market hours and closed days

The Tsukiji Outer Market is the retail food district that stayed behind when the wholesale market moved to Toyosu in 2018: several hundred shops, stalls and restaurants in narrow streets, most of them open to the sky. Its association publishes three time windows for the whole market:

So 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. is the official public-shopping window, not a single opening time for every stall: individual shops and restaurants keep their own hours. The best time for a visitor is after 9:00 and well before 2:00 p.m.; before 9:00, the association asks visitors to give way to the buyers.

The Outer Market follows the same wholesale calendar as Toyosu, so it is closed on the same Sundays, holidays and Wednesdays. The association’s own note on the calendar says each shop sets its own days, though, so some shops may open on a closed day. For a full Tsukiji morning, pick a Toyosu trading day.

A few places keep their own hours:

• Tsukiji Uogashi, the indoor market building: open 5:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with all shops trading from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Visitors are asked to come after 9:00 a.m. The 3rd-floor Uogashi Shokudo food court runs from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., last order 6:00 p.m.
• Plat Tsukiji, the information center: 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on weekdays and Saturdays, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Sundays, holidays and market closed days.

Late December is the busiest stretch of the year. The association names December 25 to 30 as the peak of year-end shopping, when every shop opens and trade starts from about 6:00 a.m.; on December 31 shops choose their own hours. If you want a relaxed browse in December, go before the middle of the month.

Choosing the month for a Tokyo trip

If you are still choosing when to visit Tokyo, choose the month for the wider city trip rather than for Toyosu. The wholesale market is enclosed, while the Tsukiji Outer Market is mostly outdoors, so summer heat and rainy-season weather matter more there.

In practice that means three things. In July and August, when Tokyo’s average high reaches about 30 to 31 °C, see Tsukiji early in the day; the Ministry of the Environment’s heat-illness alerts run from late April to late October, and on an alert day the indoor market is the better place to spend the late morning. The rainy season in the Tokyo area normally runs from early June to mid-July, and September and October are the wettest months, so bring an umbrella for Tsukiji. And from December 25 to 30 Tsukiji has its busiest year-end shopping days.

The season also changes what is on the counters. The Tokyo Central Wholesale Market lists oysters, torafugu pufferfish, monkfish, winter yellowtail, red sea bream and flounder as winter fish, saury and scallops as autumn fish, first bonito in spring and yellowfin tuna in summer. If you arrive on a closed day

On a closed day there is no tuna auction or wholesale trading, and the market’s restaurants and shops keep their own days, so check one before going for a meal. The area around the market is open as usual:

• The Toyosu Market rooftop garden is open from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., including on closed days, with views over Tokyo Bay.
• Toyosu Senkyaku Banrai, the food street next to the market, has no regular closed day and opens even when the market is closed; individual shop hours vary. Shops generally open 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and restaurants 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. (some close at 8:00 p.m.), and the free 8th-floor footbath runs 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., closing early on some dates for private events.
• Tokyo Toyosu Manyo Club, the hot-spring spa inside Senkyaku Banrai, is open 24 hours; the large baths close from 3:00 to 5:00 a.m. for cleaning.
• teamLab Planets TOKYO, a short walk away, is open 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. with last entry an hour before closing, and runs through the end of 2027. It is closed on October 1 and November 5, 2026, and needs a timed ticket.
• At Tsukiji, Tsukiji Hongwanji temple is open from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (grounds to 9:00 p.m.), and Cafe Tsumugi inside it serves from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., with its 18-dish breakfast until 10:30 a.m.

Where this evidence stops

We do not have a visitor count for Toyosu Market. Nobody publishes one by month, weekday or hour, so this page makes no claim about which is quieter. The upper walkway has no visitor limit, and the calendar does not tell you how busy a given day will be.

The auction’s finishing time varies. The market gives about 5:30 to 6:30 a.m. and says the end depends on how much fish comes in that day.

There is no official weather-closure policy. We found nothing that says the market closes for a typhoon or snow, so treat the published calendar as the answer and check the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s site if a severe storm is forecast.

The calendar can change. The authority can add or move a closed day, and the calendar after 2027 is not published yet.
